Israel rejects US call to halt Jerusalem project

Israel rejects US call to halt Jerusalem project
By AMY TEIBEL, Associated Press Writer Amy Teibel, Associated Press Writer 1 hr 7 mins ago

JERUSALEM – Israel on Sunday rejected a U.S. demand to suspend a planned housing project in east Jerusalem, threatening to further complicate an unusually tense standoff with its strongest ally over settlement construction.

Israeli officials said the country's ambassador to Washington, Michael Oren, was summoned to the State Department over the weekend and told that a project being developed by an American millionaire in the disputed section of the holy city should not go ahead.

Settlements built on captured lands claimed by the Palestinians have emerged as a major sticking point in relations between Israel and the Obama administration because of their potential to disrupt Mideast peacemaking.

Although Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently yielded to heavy U.S. pressure to endorse the establishment of a Palestinian state, he has resisted American demands for an immediate freeze on settlement expansion.

On Sunday, Netanyahu told his Cabinet there would be no limits on Jewish construction anywhere in "unified Jerusalem."

"We cannot accept the fact that Jews wouldn't be entitled to live and buy anywhere in Jerusalem," Netanyahu declared, calling Israeli sovereignty over the entire city "indisputable."

The international community considers Jewish neighborhoods in east Jerusalem to be settlements and an obstacle to Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking. Israel does not regard them as settlements because it annexed east Jerusalem in 1967 after capturing it in June of that year.

Bomba al hotel vela

http://hotelvelabarcelona.com/blog/es/cancion-del-verano-2009/

CEO Chiquita Banana says we didn't see the news that paying money to paramilitaries was illegal

This is 60 minutes reports asking the CEO of Chiquita Banana why the companay paid for 7 years extortion money to paramilitary forces in Colombia when they knew that they were massacring campasinos in villages all over Colombia.

Then he asks him that when the US passed a law that it was illegal to do so, how could they have kept making payments for two years after. He says that he didn't see the notice that was in the NY times, Cincinnati paper where Chiquita has its headquarters, and everyone in Colombia knew the law had been passed. He lies and lies again.

Chiquita has paid fines and more charges remain but the mentality is the mentality of 'free trade', of multinational coporations, the business in foriegn countries has nothing to do with the people of those countries, their lives are expendable. They are only interested in the extraction of capital. Punto.
